Knowledge Share Description

Although it often gets overlooked due to its racial profile, The Caribbean is not a monolith. The region often called the West Indies is a melting pot of cultures, flavors and sounds shaped by forced migration and colonialism. In this knowledge share we will explore the plants, spices, and culinary techniques that define the region and how it all came together. Participants will make a salad from traditional ingredients. Through this knowledge share with will journey through the history of how Caribbean Food came to be.

We will explore:

  • How forced migration created 'the Caribbean' as we know it

  • Popular foods of the region

  • Breaking down the melting pot of cultures

  • Culinary techniques of the Caribbean

  • African influences

  • Spiritual herbalism

Christine Brooks is an educator, writer and cook employing culinary skills, bush medicine, Ayurvedic & Functional Nutrition studies to address individual and community health. Through energetically balanced meals; 1-on-1 counseling; and hands on cooking classes Christine helps you to feel balanced, and energized daily.
