Knowledge Share Description

An exploration into what it means to hold Irish ancestry in the wake of colonialism. Who is really Irish? This knowledge will center Irish people of color in exploring their Irish heritage. Using thematic ancestral foods, plants, and animals from Ireland as guiding stars -- we will explore Irish history, socio-political context surrounding modern Irish identity, overlapping identities and foodways, solidarity movements between Irish people and global marginalized communities, and connections to land. Participants of all backgrounds are welcome.

We will

• Who gets to be considered "Irish", and why?

• Introduction to 6 culturally significant plants, animals and their cultural context

• Holding space for weighted histories of lineage

• Contextualizing modern Irish political identity of resistance to imperialism vs diasporic identity as a tool of the oppressor

• Bridging the gap between "Kiss me I'm Irish" and cultivating rooted relationship with heritage

• Seeds for deeper exploration into Irish indigeneity vs role in global European settler colonialism

Facilitator

Maebh Aguilar is a plant tender, artist, farmer/gardener,, herbalist, writer and seed saver. Their work orbits themes like migration, anti-imperialism, ancestral foods, folklore and cultural use of plants, place-based ecology and the dissolution of state borders. They are Ecuadorian and Irish, from an immigrant family. They were born, raised & live in Philadelphia where they co-teach a Building Your Home Apothecary herbal course and work as staff at Truelove Seeds.
